Police boss wanted over shooting civilian dead in Apaa

Adjumani, (UG):- The Territorial Police in North West Nile Region and Adjumani CPS have put up a serious manhunt, for one Acaye Moses, a police officer at the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) over the revenge attack and murder by shooting of a suspect who was following up a case of his brother’s death.

Acaye, a police officer attached to Alebtong District as the OC station is accused of murder by shooting Omona Simon, a 24-year-old, peasant of Lulayi village in a tragic incident that occurred last week on 20th February 2024.

According to Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, the suspect who left his station with a pistol reported his presence at Appa Police Station, on the 20th of February 2024, to follow up on investigations into the murder of his brother, Opio Emmanuel, by a mob on the 10th of this month.

“He was among a team that responded to Apaa Trading Centre after one of the suspects was sighted. Upon reaching the trading centre, he drew his pistol and shot at the victim, who was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he died,” Enanga said while addressing journalists on Monday, February 26, 2024.

Mr Enanga said a serious manhunt for the suspect is currently ongoing after the runaway officer went and handed over the pistol for safe custody, at Lacor Hospital Police Post on 24th February 2024 before disappearing.

“The alleged perpetrator is a police officer, who swore to serve and protect people from harm. It is, therefore, unfortunate that he abandoned his sworn oath to uphold the sanctity of life when he fatally wounded the victim,” Me Enanga explained.

The Police Spokesperson spoke regretfully of the officer’s action which he said constitute a gross abuse of police authority, for the use of excessive force, which resulted in the senseless murder of Omona Simon. “We encourage him to hand over and defend himself.”

“To the victim’s family, friends and relatives, we regret the harm caused by our officer. We shall not rest until when he is arrested and charged to court for murder and theft of a police motorcycle,” concluded Enanga.
