Policeman arrested for shooting suspect dead in Kole

Kole, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Kole District, northern Uganda are holding one of their own, PPC Mugisa Eliot, a police officer attached to Alemi Police Post on allegations of shooting dead a civilian.

PPC Eliot reportedly shot Daniel Obura, 28 years old from Bala Town Council on Monday, 26th February, at around 2 pm.

According to preliminary findings, it is alleged that PPC Eliot, together with two other officers, D/CPL Mathias Katongole, and PC Emmanuel Mama booked out from Alemi police post to effect the arrest of a suspect identified as Angole Daniel Abii on a case of assault registered at Alemi police post-SD reference 06/14/08/2023.

DailyExpress established through Sam Elyak, the LCIII Chairperson of Bala Sub County that the suspect was amongst the people who were moving with the cows to Agege village, Bala Sub-County in Kole District to pay dowry.

The suspect and his gang were reportedly intercepted on the way at Bala Town Council however in the process of handcuffing the suspect, a scuffle ensued between the team going for a marriage ceremony and police.

“The deceased and other police officers entered a confrontation. There was use of a stick and in the process of struggling, a bullet went off and hit the deceased who died on the spot,” Elyak said.

A report obtained by DailyExpress indicates that shortly after the shoot, the officer handed himself to Bala police station but residents went and attacked Bala police station with the intention to kill the officer.

This prompted a reinforcement from the North Kyoga Region which managed to disperse the riotous crowd and rescue the police officers from Bala police station.

Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga police spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday said police are currently investigating the circumstances under which PPC Mugisa Eliot released the bullet that killed Obura Daniel Abii.

He said the officer who allegedly shot the deceased and the suspect in the assault case Angole Daniel Abii were all arrested and detained at Kole Central Police Station.

“A case of murder by shooting has been registered at Kole CPS, scene visits led by the detectives and SOCO, and exhibits of cartridges were recovered. The gun allegedly used by the officer has been retrieved and exhibited, statements recorded from relevant witnesses,” Mr Okema said.

The regional police boss condemned the incident and sent condolences to the bereaved family. He, however, urged the public to always respect law enforcement officers.

By press time on Tuesday, the deceased body was picked up and conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary pending postmortem.
