Jose Peseiro steps down as Nigeria Coach after AFCON 2023

lagos, (NG):- Head Coach Jose Peseiro has announced his departure from the role of coaching the Nigerian Men’s national football team.

Despite guiding the Super Eagles to the final in his maiden major tournament, Peseiro has chosen to step down, marking the end of his 22-month tenure filled with dedication, sacrifice, and emotional highs. 

Peseiro’s decision to depart comes despite meeting the Nigeria Football Federation’s target of securing a semi-final berth, showcasing the depth of his commitment to the team.

Peseiro’s appointment in May 2022 raised eyebrows initially, with doubts surrounding his suitability for the role. 

However, he quickly silenced sceptics with his pragmatic style and strategic approach, leading the team through commendable performances, including a thrilling semi-final victory over South Africa in a penalty shootout.

Despite their valiant efforts, the Super Eagles fell short in the final against Cote d’Ivoire, prompting Peseiro’s departure from the helm.

In a poignant social media post, Peseiro reflected on his time with Nigeria, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the footballing family. He emphasized the sense of fulfilment derived from his tenure, acknowledging the privilege it has been to lead the team.

“Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles,” Peseiro tweeted.

“It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment,” he added

As Nigeria embarks on the search for a new manager, the spotlight shifts to finding a successor capable of building on recent successes and propelling the nation to greater heights on the international stage. 

With calls growing for Nigeria to recruit a world-class coach, the pressure mounts to identify the right candidate who can fill Peseiro’s shoes and steer the team towards continued excellence.

The conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, with Peseiro’s departure signalling both a farewell and a new beginning.
