Kabala, (UG):- Voters in southwestern Uganda’s Kabale Municipality were left overjoyed in the ongoing NRM Register Update after the former area Member of Parliament, Mr Andrew Aja Baryayanga rejoined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) after over 10 years since he shunned the ruling party.

Baryayanga had in 2010 denounced the NRM immediately after losing in the party primaries to Serapio Rukundo, then Minister for Tourism, whom he accused Rukundo of rigging an election as party election officials failed to act.

In the 2011 general elections, Baryayanga contested as an independent candidate and trounced Rukundo.

Baryayanga went on to serve for two terms as an independent candidate (2011, 2016) until 2021 when he lost to Dr Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

On Wednesday as the NRM party kicked off the national update of the register in preparation for the 2025 primaries and 2026 general elections, Baryayanga appeared in a yellow shirt as he held a party manifesto and constitution in his hands.

He walked to Kilwa village polling station in Kijuguta ward, Northern Division, Kabale municipality where he made a fresh registration with the party. After registration, he revealed to our reporter that he has decided to rejoin the party.

Asked why he re-joined, Baryayanga says that he feels this time; election malpractices within the party could be very low since he had quit out of anger and some advice from his campaign agents.

He also hinted at contesting for the same seat again some 2026.

The NRM’s register update that kicked off today is scheduled to run up to Sunday, March 17-2024, after which the party will carry out a Village Baraza to verify the registered members.
