Julius Mucunguzi appointed new EC Spokesperson

Kampala, (UG):– The Electoral Commission (EC) has appointed Mr Julius Mucunguzi as the new spokesperson, ahead of a busy electoral roadmap foe the 2026 general elections.

Mucunguzi, a reasoned journalist and communication specialist replaces Paul Bukenya who has been serving as the electoral body’s acting spokesperson since the departure of then Principal Publicist, Mr Jotham Taremwa in 2020. 

According to a press statement released by EC on Friday, Mucunguzi, who previously served as a communication specialist in the Office of the Prime Minister under Dr Ruhakana Rugunda’s regime emerged as the best candidate for the position during the interviews held last year.

“Julius Mucunguzi emerged as the best candidate during the interviews conducted last year, to fill the position of Head of Public Relations, Electoral Commission,” Mr Bukenya said in a Friday statement.

“Accordingly, a letter of appointment has been issued to him, and he will assume office on 1st April 2024,” the statement adds.

Muzunguzi’s appointment comes at the time when the electoral body is recruiting new staff to replace those that have retired on moved on as it positions for 2026 polls.

Experience

Muzunguzi has previously worked as a spokesperson for Africa at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK, an international interstate agency responsible for 53 countries formerly colonies of Britain.

Before joining the Commonwealth Secretariat in 2006, he was a senior communications officer at World Vision Uganda.

Between 2000-2006, Mucunguzi taught news writing and reporting at Makerere University.

He is also a former journalist for the government-owned NewVision newspaper but started his journalism journey at DailyMonitor in the early 1990s
