LIST: Over 5000 workers face deletion from govt payroll over non-verification (see names per district)

Kampala, (UG):- With less than two months left to the deadline set for civil servants and public officers to update their details in the ongoing verification exercise, a list of over 5000 government workers facing deletion from the payroll has leaked leaving thousands stranded.

It should be noted that Uganda’s Ministry of Public Service early this month issued a payroll validation exercise running from March 11, 2024, to May 17, 2024, at the National Archies and Records Center in Kampala and at all district headquarters countrywide.

“The affected public officers should appear on the dates indicated against their votes. The dates are indicated in the schedule and can be accessed on www.publicservice.go.ug or from the office of the responsible officers,” the State Minister for Public Service, Ms Mary Mugasa said at a press conference two weeks ago, adding that any public officer who will remain unverified after May 17, 2024, shall be permanently deleted from the payroll.

Background to Payroll Verification Exercise

The call for verification of civil servants’ details came after a recently released report from Auditor General John Muwanga established that 10,192 government employees should not have been on the government payroll by June 2023.

According to the report, a total of sh53b was annually being paid to this category of staff.

The report which the AG presented to Parliament on the annual accounts of the government for the financial year ended 30th June 2023 contained audit findings on the consolidated financial statements, the financial performance of public corporations, state enterprises and companies in which the government has a controlling interest.
