One arrested, Prado TX impounded as police burst cattle theft racket in Mbale

Mbale, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Mbale City have arrested and detained a 30-year-old man and impounded a Toyota Prado Tx car registration number UBD 798L used in transporting suspected stolen cows within and around Bugisu sub-region of Eastern Uganda.

The suspect identified as Kikonde Caesar, 30, a resident of the Hospital cell of North Central ward, Northern Division is currently in detention at Mbale central police station pending a court appearance for theft-related charges.

According to Elgon regional police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, it is believed to have been operating a racket of criminals and police are currently hunting for two others who managed to escape but a bull and a cow were recovered in the Sunday night patrol by police.

“He has been arrested and we have impounded a Prado Tx used in transporting suspected stolen cows within and around Bugisu sub-region, two others managed to escape and we are hunting for them. A bull and a cow have been recovered and we suspect the thieves were planning to sell off the cows for Easther to the public,” SP Taitika said.

Taitika in a statement said the police were able to trail the suspected thieves till morning hours from Mbale City to where the suspect and two others still at large had planned to offload the cows from but eventually had to drive off after identifying another vehicle following them and this prompted police offices to chase the speeding car, followed by gunshots targeted at deflating the tyres.

“The thieves were chased by police from Kilulu Cell, Nabweya Ward, Northern Division in Mbale city until it was during the morning hours at close to 2 am when a motor vehicle Reg. No. UBD 798L suspected to be carrying stolen cows passed by. They trailed it from behind up to Kilulu centre where the vehicle stopped to offload the cows but when the occupants saw another vehicle following, they decided to drive off very fast which prompted a chase by the police officers followed by gunshots targeted at deflating the tyres. They reached Buwamwangu Cell in Bukonde ward – Northern Division where two (02) of the occupants of the above motor vehicle jumped out and ran away abandoning the car,” SP Taitika told Daily Express.

Police recovered a cow and a bull from the car and other items suspected to have been of use by the suspect and others still at large in organised crimes.

These include two button phones (01) Nokia and (01) Itel, 02 National IDs belonging to one Mwesige Jackson of Kihanga village, Kyentale ward, Mparo Division in Hoima Municipality and Otudeku Ezera of Namugongo- Buloli cell, Kyaliwajala ward, Kiira town council in Wakiso District were found in the vehicle.

The Prado was towed by police and parked at the police yard as investigations into the illicit actions continued.
