Paver hitmen terrifying Namugongo residents

Wakiso, (UG):- Residents of Namungongo Division in Wakiso District’s Kira Municipality have cried to security forces to intervene in the wake of alarming deaths resulting from attacks by paver hitmen and thugs in the area.

The hitmen who are said to be in their teens usually attack their victims from 10 pm onwards, spotting them in black spots where there is no or slow human and motor traffic.

Despite most Villages in Namugongo Division being home to senior political and government officials in the country, some of whom are heavily guarded, these thugs are not scared to strike their victims within the vicinity or on the routes to their homes.

A source who preferred anonymity to this story said, “We are also really concerned that some of the attacks are happening next to the police public cameras, and no hitman has been arrested in relation to the murders.”

In one particular narrated to DailyExpress, it is alleged for example that Alex Nabimanya, a boda boda rider attached to Mbalwa Centre boda stage was hit near the camera at the junction leading to Nabwojo Road, Wabusana while from Mbalwa heading to Namugongo Catholic Shrine.

“He was hit on his way home on the 16th February 2024 after parking his bike at a night parking bay. He succumbed to the injuries of the attack at Mulago National Referral Hospital where he had been taken for treatment two days after,” a concerned resident narrated.

It is also alleged that an unidentified woman was murdered within the same area before Alex met his death.

Another victim is Brain, who operates a mini supermarket and wholesale shop along Mbalwa Road as you come from Agenda 2000 stage was robbed while closing up at about midnight and an unspecified amount of money was taken.

Another unidentified man was hit with a paver in Mbalwa as you head to Hoasana Primary School before Chamuka. The list of victims is endless.

What Leaders say

Hon. Kamugisha Edin, a former Woman Candidate NRM for Namugongo Division, to Kira Municipality, says “there is a need for installation of security lights along the roads of Mbalwa and the neighbouring areas”.

On his part, the LC. 1 Chairperson Mbalwa 1, Mr Katogo John, says “what is happening is overwhelming, but what is more worrying are the recurrent murders”. He however called on all the leaders in the areas to be vigilant at all times if the crimes are to be curbed.

According to the majority of the people this publication talked to in relation to security matters, there is a high rise in crime in most parts of the country. The main question now is, what is the cause of this rise?
