How four Buganda Royal students perished in car crash en route Garuga beach

Entebbe, (UG): At least four students of Buganda Royal Institute in Mengo Saturday perished in a nasty car crash which left two others injured at Musinde on Garuga road in Katabi Town Council in Wakiso District.

According to preliminary information obtained by this publication, the students, all boys, in their early and mid-20s were reportedly headed to Katomi Beach in Garuga when their car, a Toyota Corolla Rumion lost control and rammed into a stationary beverage truck parked at the roadside.

Further reports say the students were being followed by others travelling in an institute bus and another private bus to the beach but the rest weren’t involved in the nasty crash.

SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Traffic Police Directorate confirmed that four of the students died on the spot, while two others were rushed to Kisubi Hospital in Entebbe.

“Police in Kisubi registered an accident involving Toyota Rumion UBH 582S which was carrying six students of Buganda Royal Institute. The driver was also a student from the same institute. It’s alleged that the driver of the Rumion and a Toyota Hiace (drone) that was following it were speeding. The driver of the Rumion attempted to overtake another car in a sharp corner only to ram into a stationary Fuso truck loaded with soda. Four students died on the on the spot while two sustained serious injuries,” Mr Kananura said.

Kananura added that bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem as investigations into the crash continue.

By press time, the identities of the deceased students were yet to be established, but it was all a sombre mood at the Buganda Kingdom attached institute.
