Lira, (UG):- The Deputy Mayor of Lira City West Division, Ms Rose Ongom has been affirmed as the acting Mayor of Lira City West Division until 2026 when the electoral commission organizes another election.
Ms Ongom has acted in the capacity of Mayor of the division for over six months after the Lira City West Mayoral seat fell vacant following the death of Division Mayor, Michael Ogwal Achonga last year 2023.
Her affirmation in the position was Friday confirmed by Lira City Town Clerk, Theophilus Tibiyika in an event that took place at the City Council Hall.
On the other hand, the speaker of Lira City Council, Mr Patrick Adem said he will offer total support to Rose Ongom to execute her duty.
In her remarks after her confirmation as full Mayor, Ms Ongom pledged to work together with civil servants and councillors for the development of Lira City West Division.
Recently, the Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi in his letter dated April 10th, 2024 to the acting Mayor Rose Ongom, affirmed that Section 18(5) of the Local Government act CAP 243 provide that the deputy Mayor assumes the office of the Chairperson or Mayor until the Independent Electoral Commission organises a by- election.
