Nkumba University Saturday etched its name in the annals of football history with a resounding 3-1 triumph over Uganda Christian University (UCU) in a heart-pounding finale to win the Pepsi University Football League title for the 2023/24 season.
The match played at Lugogo stadium amidst a backdrop of fervent support from fans of both sides, showcased the sheer determination and skill of Nkumba as they secured their maiden university league title.
From the onset, it was clear that both teams were eager to seize victory. The game commenced with fervour as Nkumba’s Kennedy Ssebaduuka swiftly found the back of the net in the 11th minute, sending waves of excitement through the Nkumba faithful.
As the match progressed, UCU faced a setback with goalkeeper John Collins Wesonga receiving a red card in the 22nd minute for handling the ball outside the box, leaving the Cardinals with a mountain to climb.
Undeterred by the numerical advantage, Nkumba capitalized on their momentum, with Ismael Lubega showcasing his prowess with a stunning curling free kick in the 24th minute, extending the lead to 2-0.
Isaac Musuga further bolstered Nkumba’s dominance with a clinical finish in the 36th minute, leaving UCU with an uphill battle to overturn the deficit.
Despite facing an uphill task, UCU demonstrated resilience, with Sharif Ssewayana pulling one back for the hosts in the 49th minute, injecting renewed hope into their quest for victory.
However, Nkumba’s steadfast defence and strategic gameplay proved insurmountable as they held firm against UCU’s onslaught.
As the match drew to a close, Nkumba found themselves on the brink of glory, with just minutes remaining on the clock. With unwavering determination and a display of teamwork, they successfully navigated the final moments of the game, sealing their victory and igniting jubilant celebrations among players and fans alike.
