Suspected thief killed, another arrested for stealing scrap at Jinja steel factory

Jinja, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Jinja are investigating circumstances under which a suspected scrap thief was on Saturday night killed and another arrested in an attempt to steal scrap from Abyssinia Iron and Steel Factory, Jinja branch.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi confirmed the incident saying; “Four suspects were caught red-handed stealing scrap at Abyssinia Iron and Steel factory Jinja branch. One put out of action, one arrested and two took off.”

Mr Mubi added that the other two suspects managed to escape after hearing gunshots from Priority One security guards, the security company responsible for guarding the factory premises.

“The suspects are residents of Danida in Walukuba – Masese, Jinja city. They were caught red-handed stealing scrap belonging to Abyssinia Iron and Steel Factory – Jinja branch on April 20, 2024, the incident occurred at around 9 pm. The above-mentioned factory premises are guarded by Priority One security group,” reads in part a Saturday statement by the Regional Police mouthpiece.

He identified the deceased suspect as Reagan, and his accomplice currently in police custody as John Buwale, 24, adding that police were able to recover exhibits of scrap as an active search for the two suspects who escaped after security at the factory foiled their deal.

“The deceased person has been identified as Reagan, the arrested one is John Buwale 24 and the two took off following the gunfire from the security guards. Exhibits of scrap have been recovered and the search for the two suspects still at large is ongoing,” the statement reads.

The deceased’s body was taken to Jinja Main Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination as police went on with prosecution-guided investigations to ascertain the genesis of the matter.
