Seven arrested over caning Muslim girl for going to church in viral video

Kibuku, (UG):- Authorities in eastern Uganda’s Kibuku District have arrested at least seven individuals over the assault on 19-year-old Nakirya Shakira, reportedly carried out by her uncles in a viral video circulating on social media.

The incident took place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the home of Late Hajji Kosi in Bugolya Cell, Nabunyere Ward, Kadama Town Council, along the Kadama Idudi road in Kibuku district.

Following the incident, Pastor Nicholas Kitwa, reported the case to the Kadama Police Station (SD Ref. 13/22/4/2024), before the video recording of the assault subsequently went viral on various social media platforms.

Preliminary reports indicate that Shakira was reportedly targeted by her uncles against her decision to attend church, despite the family being of Muslim faith.

The victim is alleged to have been experiencing disturbances, which led the family to seek help from a shrine, but with no success. Upon a friend’s recommendation, Shakira decided to seek spiritual assistance from the Saved Community (Balokole) church.
