Sironko residents cry out after Sigwana metalic ladders destroyed by rolling rock

Sironko, (UG): The Community in Butandiga Sub-county, Sironko District has been left stranded, after Sigwana Metalic Ladders that were put in place by the Central Government, to ease their movement in 2021, were broken by a rolling rock on Sunday 21 April 2024 during the heavy rains.

While speaking to NTV Uganda on Monday 22nd April 2024, Mr. Nabubolo Ezekiel said, “A rock rolled down from Lutale Village, Bunamaye Parish, fell on the Ladders and broke them”.

He added, “The stairs serve the Five Sub – counties of Soti under Bulambuli District, Kikobelo, Elgon, Butandiga Town Council and Bukise”.

The locals from the mentioned sub-counties climb up the ladders to Butandiga Sub-county as a shortcut to access schools, hospitals and markets.

Nabubolo said, “Because of the damage, I doubt if the children who were supposed to start exams on come to school”. He says, “If not handled fast it may lead to some children dropping out of school”.

On his part, Mr Wanyala Geoffrey, the Chairperson of the Disaster Committee in Sironko District, has called on the Central Government through the Prime Minister’s Office to come to their rescue because at their level they don’t have the capacity to repair the damaged Ladders.

He also advised that; “The people in the affected areas, should seek refuge in safer places until the rains stop”.
