Five arrested for calling census exercise ‘satanic’ in Alebtong

Alebtong, (UG):- Security personnel in Alebtong District are holding five suspects on allegations of decampaigning the ongoing national population and housing census exercise in the district.

The suspects include Daniel Obangakene, 30 years old, a deacon, Jesse Ogenrwot 20 years old, Emmanuel Abel 27 years old, Emmanuel Atekirwot 26 years old and Daniel Poyopira 19 years old all residents of Alebtong Atedi A cell, Alyee ward, Alebtong Town Council.

According to preliminary reports, it is alleged that the suspects were preaching against immunization, census, and National IDs and that the programmes by the government are all devilish and satanic which the community should not involve themselves in.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson confirmed the report and said the suspects were accordingly charged with offence of common nuisance

According to Okema, Alex Odyek, a medical officer attached to Alebtong Health Center IV at around 1800 hours reported the suspects to District Police Commander Alebtong district that some preachers were talking badly and discouraging members of the public about the census exercise which started on Friday 10th May 2024.

“Police acted on the tips given to DPC and 5 Suspects have been arrested and detained in police custody at Alebtong CPS, statements from relevant witnesses have been recorded, Exhibits of the speaker, microphone, and bicycle recovered and exhibited,” SP Okema said.

He added that while taking their statements, suspects claimed they were being inspired by their church pastor Peace of Trumpet Ministry Uganda located in Adaka, Amach in Lira-City East Division but that trace for him is ongoing and urged anyone who knows the pastor’s whereabouts to share it with the police to support investigations.

According to Mr Okema, the Case file is ready for submission to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and Legal Advice.
