Kampala, (UG):- Makerere University Vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has directed an investigation into an examination set at Makerere Law School that satirized Speaker Anita Annet Among seemingly fighting back against imposed UK Sanctions.
The paper in question is L1210 – Principles of Constitutional Law II taught by Prof. Oloka Onyango, a lecturer at the school of law which was done by first-year students on May 11, 2024.
In the essay, Speaker Among is seen trying to fight back against sanctions imposed on her by the United Kingdom and criticism from netizens.
“Stung by the recent sanctions imposed against her by the government of the United Kingdom (UK) and the social media criticism that followed, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has decided to fight back against those “writing malicious reports” about her,” the essay reads.
The Speaker goes ahead to introduces a bill called ‘Speaker’s Bill’ aimed at punishing her critics.
“Thus, on Monday, May 6th, 2024, she introduced what she called a “Speaker’s Bill” entitled the “Anti-Social Media and Other Imperialist Agents Bill,” which contains the following provisions, inter alia,” the essay continues.
The essay further sees Speaker Among kicking out ‘Joelo’ from parliament for trying to oppose the newly introduced speaker’s bill’.
“You, Joelo, shut up. Are you one of those bum-shafters who is after my life? I am the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Queen of Bukedea, and Conqueress of the British Empire. In this House, I can do whatever I please,” reads the essay.
Now Prof. Nawangwe has requested the principal at the law school to investigate whether the paper meets minimum academic standards and whether there are ethical issues that fall below expected standards.
The principal is also expected to investigate the past three sets of exams set by the same lecturer and submit a report to the chairperson of the Senate.
DailyExpress understands that the University Senate sat yesterday, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, to discuss the report about the exam and a report was submitted to the VC in due course.
