Any follower of the Uganda national team – Uganda Cranes has recently come across the name Elio Capradossi, the 28-year-old defender who recently made his debut and immediately won over the hearts of soccer lovers, turning into a fan favourite, thanks to his exceptional skills, dedication and pace at the heart of the Cranes’ defence.
Just last Friday, Capradossi played his first game for the Uganda Cranes, helping the team secure a 1-0 win against Botswana Zebras in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Mandela National Stadium, courtesy of a Muhammad Shaban strike. He also featured on Monday as Uganda lost 2-1 to visitors Algeria.
The defender, of Italian descent, recently shared his remarkable journey from his childhood in Kampala to his rise in Italian football.
Born in Kampala to an Italian father and Ugandan mother, Capradossi’s love for football was nurtured by his father, who played with him in their backyard in Entebbe.
His family later moved to Rome, where he joined Roma’s youth setup and eventually played for the first team, a milestone he cherishes.
Inspired by Brazilian defender Juan, Capradossi developed his defensive skills, becoming known for his aggression, long passes, and aerial ability.
When Coach Paul Put approached him about playing for Uganda, Capradossi was honoured to connect with his roots. Despite initial nerves, he felt welcomed by his teammates, particularly Nelson Senkatuka, and was impressed by the team’s camaraderie.
Capradossi’s debut showcased his exceptional skills, earning him praise from fans and critics alike. His composure, intelligence, and aerial ability have made him an asset to the team.
