Zombo, (UG):- Paidha Town Council located in the West Nile district of Zombo plans to organize a Taxpayers’ Day on which it will honour compliant taxpayers with certificates for the indelible fulfilment of their obligation of payment of taxes.
The taxpayers’ day that is still to be gazetted is among the many revenue enhancement strategies designed by Paidha TC to effect mobilization of the 690 million shillings projected local revenue to fund part of the about 2.1 billion shillings budget for the financial year 2024/25.
Stewards of the finance planning and administration department of the town council say the taxpayers’ day will provide a podium for revenue officers to applaud taxpayers, induct the business community and the general public on the merits of timely payment of taxes to the government and the taxer payer as to the delivery of services.
Mr Anjelo Onim Akabway, the Finance Secretary at the TC during his presentation to the full council meeting of May 2024 noted that the day is meant to celebrate compliant taxpayers. “Compliant taxpayers will be recognized and awarded certificates as a strategy to enhance tax compliance we believe this will set healthy tax compliance competition among the taxpayers,” said Onim during the budget estimate presentation.
This persuasive initiative aims at disbanding the cat-and-rat relationship between taxpayers and collectors hence discouraging the mechanical measures of tax mobilization and building a sense of responsibility among taxpayers.
Mr Pascal Kumakech, Chairperson Finance, Planning and Administration of Paidha Town Council iterated that taxpayers should know how their taxes are utilized. “We shall sensitize the taxpayers on how the money they pay trickle back to them in the form of services and when they understand that they shall willingly pay the taxes,” Kumakech commented.
Paidha Town Council seeks to mobilize 690 million Ugandan shillings in addition to the over 1.4 billion shillings the central government transfers for the financial year 2024/25.
