Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said that the operation has led to the arrest of a key suspect in that footage identified as Mutebi Peter aged 30 years, a resident of Quorta zone, Kyebando parish, Kawempe Division, the outskirt of the city.

“On 13 Jun 24 at about 1200 hours, Wandegeya Police Division conducted an intelligence-led operation targeting criminals siphoning fuel at Mulago mortuary washing bay, Busia zone, Wandegeya parish Kawempe Division. This followed a video footage that circulated on social media showing three people siphoning fuel from a vehicle, double cabin grey in colour. The key suspect in that footage was arrested and has been identified as Mutebi Peter aged 30 years, unemployed and a resident of Quorta zone, Kyebando parish, Kawempe Division in Kampala District,” Mr Onyango stated.

“We’re still looking for the others still at large, the group is big, and this is what has been happening, among these are Asiku, Lubwama, Mawanda, John, Emma and Kalema, all these are a part of the group,” Onyango said.

The Police intelligence further revealed that over 20 vehicles are siphoned on a daily basis and the fuel is sold out to boda boda riders at Shs 5,000 per two litres whereas diesel is sold in Bwaise.

It has also been revealed that the drivers connive with the same criminals to siphon the fuel from their bosses’ vehicles, and the same criminal activity has been taking long in the same area with full knowledge of managers of the washing.

Onyango says the suspect has been charged with Stealing from a Motor vehicle as the operation is being extended to all washing bays in the same area.

“Intelligence reveals that the Drivers connive with criminals to siphon the fuel from their bosses’ vehicles. Such criminal activity has taken a long at the same area with full knowledge of managers of the washing bay. Similar operations are to be extended to nearby washing bays in the area,” Onyango added.
