Luuka Women’s Day function suspended over death of former Woman MP candidate

Ms Gladys Aliyinza, 34, who formerly contested for the position of Luuka District Woman Member of Parliament in the 2021 elections died Thursday evening in a fatal road crash

Luuka, (UG):- Luuka District Local Government has suspended the long-awaited Women’s Day celebrations initially slated for today Friday, June 28, after the death of Ms Gladys Aliyinza, a former contestant for the District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

Aliyinza, a potential candidate for the same seat in the upcoming 2026 elections perished in a road crash on Thursday evening at Nawansega village, Bukoova town council in Luuka district.

The deceased who was also the wife of the Deputy press secretary to the president of Uganda Mr. Kirunda Faruk, was travelling in a double cabin registration number UG 4654C alongside her driver and political assistant Biita Yusuf when the vehicle collided head-on with a sugarcane truck registration number UAU 073G coming from the opposite direction.

Ms Aliyinza and political assistant Biita Yusuf died on the spot, while the driver identified as Kanika Ramathan was reported to be reported to be nursing injuries at Iganga General Hospital Nakavule but police said he is currently on the run.

As the shocking news continues to awash various social media platforms over Glady’s death, a person who has been labelled a gallant servant, the district local government thought it wise to cancel the Women’s Day celebrations for Luuka district which was scheduled for Friday, June 28, 2024.

The cancellation of the celebrations was announced by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Luuka district Mr Katende Ronald Kinene saying the function had been suspended indefinitely.

“Tomorrow’s function is suspended indefinitely,” RDC Katende wrote on a social platform for Luuka before being seconded by a number of followers who commended him for the wise decision as it wouldn’t be suitable to go on with the celebration amidst such a tragedy.

“Thanks, Bwana RDC for the honour of a gallant figure of Luuka, the fallen sister. There wouldn’t have been the zeal to celebrate Women’s Day when we have such a tragedy in the house, RIP Hon Gladys, may the heavenly angel receive her in the bosom,” Mr Sajja Michael, the district councillor Luuka town council said.

The deputy press secretary to the president Mr. Kirunda Faruk confirmed the death of his dear wife via his X account and he has since thanked the public for the outpouring of sympathy and support extended to him during the trying moment.

“Dear relatives, friends and in-laws, with a very heavy heart, I announce the untimely death of my dear wife Gladys Aliyinza who passed on in an accident earlier today. It’s a heavy blow on our young family and pray to Allah to see us through. Thanks to all of you for the outpouring of sympathy and support so far extended to us. Inalilahi wa inalilahi la juin!!” Mr. Kirunda tweeted.
