Local govt leaders to get pay raise in allowances in new financial year

Mbale, (UG):- Local Council leaders are set to have a raise of their allowances in the new financial year 2024/25, the Deputy Speaker of the August House of Uganda, Thomas Tayebwa has said.

The Deputy Speaker who made the revelation recently at a stakeholders meeting that took place at Wash and Wills Hotel, for the ruling party regional whips, in the Heart of the Eastern City of Mbale, through Video Conferencing, said that the leaders’ allowances have been boosted in the next financial year budget of 2024/2025.

Hon. Tayebwa was responding to the leaders’ concern, of less facilitation which was raised during the meeting.

The Government Chief Whip Hon. Hamson Obua, on his part, asked the members to be patriotic and always put the nation first.

In the meeting that followed the arrest of three Members of Parliament on corruption accusations, Hon. Obua, warned the participants against the vice, noting that the fight is going to intensify. Revealing that more arrests were going to happen as investigations continue.

The gathering brings together regional Whips from the Parliament of Uganda, area NRM MPs, Local Council and other regional leaders from Eastern Uganda. The meeting was facilitated by the Director of the Office of Government Business in Parliament, Ranny Ismail.

In line with one of the outputs of the office of the government’s Chief Whip, the workshop is organised to improve the efficiency and effective delivery of government programs.

The main objectives of the workshop include monitoring of government programs in the region and assessing challenges hampering the implementation of the NRM manifesto.

The platform will also used to enhance the capacity of regional whips in executing their duties. The same programme is going to be rolled out to other regions.

The Local council leaders also raised the issue of lack of road equipment which has hampered road maintenance in the region.
