Security guard killed, gun taken as thugs raid fueling station in Iganga

The NESTA fueling station along Iganga-Kaliro road in Iganga where the attack happened

Iganga, (UG):- Residents of Bugumba A, Silver Ward in Iganga Northern Division Tuesday woke up to utter shock after thugs attacked and killed a security guard at NESTA fueling station before taking off with his gun and a motorcycle at the station.

The deceased whose details were still scantly by press time was reportedly attacked and killed using blunt objects in the night as he was at work and his gun was taken by yet-to-be-identified perpetrators.

The supervisor of a supermarket at the petrol station Ms. Namugwana Martha says they reported at work as usual at around 5:30 pm and at around 3 am on Tuesday, they received a signal from a pump attendant to lock the supermarket after the raid by the thugs at the fueling station.

She says they had two security guards at the moment and the deceased was identified as Byandala Eria and another who survived without harm. The guards are attached to the Saracen security group.

“Our colleague who was at the pump made a signal for us to lock the supermarket and we wouldn’t understand what he meant. Immediately someone came and ordered us to surrender and lie down before asking the lady who works at the counter to go and bring the money,” Ms Namugwana narrated.

The perpetrators reportedly confiscated phones from all workers at the station and put them at gunpoint and asked for the money before jacking the locked motorcycle in the parking lot.

“He ordered us to pack all the money in a polythene bag and asked for our phones. He was with a gun and he had already killed the guard. I don’t know the amount of money which was stolen but the accountant will give us the actual figure. He also went with a motorcycle which was in the parking lot,” she said in a worry that they are at risk of being arrested by their boss.

The amount of money which was stolen has not been specified according to the workers who spoke to this publication.

Mr Wadulu Sula, a pump attendant narrated the ordeal after escaping narrowly after locking himself in the pit latrine. Wadulu who saw the thug hitting the security guard has plucked holes in the security at the station saying there is need for security as a number of criminals target them for money.

“I was in a Toyota Wish and heard a bung and I rushed to the supermarket and told the girls in the supermarket to close. I went and closed myself in the latrine but they were looking for me. The security we have here was a bit weak and I call upon our bosses to strengthen the security here because some criminals target these places,” Mr. Wadulu said.

The vice chairperson of the village Mr. Isabirye Juma said the deceased was killed using a hoe and other blunt objects before robbing the fueling station of valuables and money.

Some of the leaders in the area told DailyExpress that the area has been facing cases of insecurity and theft in the area and other related issues have been happening. Ms. Kagoya Angella Irene, the municipal councilor for Bugumba said the thugs made off with the gun of the deceased guard.

“It is very unfortunate to learn about the sad news of killing a guard and robbing the petrol station. Within the municipality, we have since had such cases of murder and no report about such has been released, therefore we call upon the police to strengthen night patrols in the outskirts of the town and not only emphasize it in the center,” Mr Mukasa Samuel alias Firemaster, the district councillor northern division said.

Meanwhile, by press time police were yet to release a statement about the incident, but police ferried the body to Iganga General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy as investigations into the incident continue.
