Man, 26, suffocates to death inside fuel tank

Budaka (Ug) – Police in eastern Uganda’s Budaka District are investigating circumstances under which a 26-year-old mechanic tragically lost his life due to suffocation inside a fuel tank at a local petrol station in the area.

The incident happened on Saturday, July 6th, 2024 at the Badde Petrol Station along the Mbale-Tirinyi Highway.

SP Semewo Samuel, the Acting Public Relations Officer for the Bukedi North Region identified the deceased as Wanaha Usama, a mechanic by profession and resident of Afiya ward, Nakaloke III Cell, Nakaloke Town Council, North Division, Mbale City.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the deceased, along with his colleague, had come to the Badde Petrol Station to service a faulty diesel tank.

“Tragically, while working inside the tank, the deceased suffered from suffocation and passed away,” Mr Semewo stated, adding that the colleague, who was present at the scene, alerted the nearby people after noticing that Wanaha had stopped working and was found inside the fuel tank.

He said the matter was immediately reported to the Budaka Police, who responded promptly at the crime scene, retrieved the body from the fuel tank and documented the incident.

“Statements from witnesses were recorded, and the body was transported to the Mbale City mortuary for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to the relatives for burial,” SP Semewo said.

Meanwhile, police said an investigation into the sudden death is ongoing to establish facts surrounding the mystery death. This tragic incident has left the community in Budaka shaken, as they grapple with the loss of a young life in such an unexpected manner.
