Hoima, (UG): Hundreds of people on Monday flocked Kyarwiru cell in Hoima East division seeking employment opportunities as bush clearing kicked off at the Hoima National Stadium construction site.
Residents mainly from Hoima City, Kikuube and Hoima district were by 7 am already at the construction site waiting to register their names.
MS Suma, the project contractor that took over the site last week told DailyExpress that the team is currently registering more casual workers as bush clearing takes precedence at the site.
Pius Wakabi Rujumba, the MP Bugahya County and member of the Rujumba family that donated the Stadium land welcomed the progress on site.] saying; “At least there is something to show that work has started. What we want now is to see our people here both skilled and not being given first priority in jobs because they are most affected”.
Speaking to this publication, some of the people who turned up expressed hope of securing employment opportunities while others cast doubt if they will be called up after registering their names.
Kihumuro Atema, a resident of Nyamirima who had just been registered said the registration exercise was transparent. “I was not asked to pay any coin to get registered and I’m hopeful that at one point, they will invite me to come for the job”. he said.
Steven Ahumuza, from Kiryabana village, said he has undergone security training and is seeking an employment opportunity in the security sector.
Innocent Atugonza, a resident of Kiryabana in Hoima East division asked leaders to support them to secure employment opportunities casting doubt if they will be called up after they have registered their names.
Upon completion, the 20,000-seater Hoima National Stadium is expected to host the 2027 Afcon games.
