Uganda Sevens Rugby team win African Champions for fourth time

The Uganda Sevens rugby team has emerged as the champions of Africa for the fourth time, winning the 2024 Rugby Africa Sevens tournament held in Mauritius.

The team’s impressive performance has earned them praise from the First Lady of Uganda, Janet Museveni, who is also the Minister of Education and Sports.

In a social media post, Mama Janet Museveni congratulated the team saying; “Champions!!! What a fantastic win for Uganda Sevens.”

“Huge applause to all of you for showing incredible resilience until the end. Your determination is absolutely admirable! Congratulations to you and the coaches, and may the Lord bless your amazing achievement!” her post via X read.

Under the guidance of coach Tolbert Onyango, Uganda won the tournament, which was played over two legs for the first time.

They defeated Madagascar and South Africa in the respective finals, securing the title with an unassailable lead in points. The team’s victory has also secured them a spot in the 2025 World Challenger Series.

The Uganda Sevens team has previously won the African Championship title in 2016, 2017, and 2022.
