SC Villa held to goalless draw in CECAFA Kagame Cup opener against S.Sudan’s EL Merriekh

The CECAFA Dar Port Kagame Cup 2024 kicked off on July 9th with a thrilling matchday between reigning Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa who were held to a goalless draw by South Sudan champions El Merriekh Bentiu at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Tanzania.

Despite the introduction of new signings Denis Omony Kaka and Najib Yiga, SC Villa, who made their return to the tournament after a 19-year absence struggled to find the back of the net, with both teams creating few clear-cut chances in the first half.

The second half saw more of the same, with neither team able to break the deadlock.

In Group A match, Al Wadi FC secured a 1-0 win over JKU SC at the KMC Stadium in Kinondoni, thanks to an early goal from Jebril Mohamed.

The striker nodded in from a free kick in the 3rd minute, giving Al Wadi an early lead that they maintained until halftime.

The goal proved to be the only one of the game, with Al Wadi FC taking all three points.

SC Villa, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their goalless draw and secure a win in their next match against Singida Black Stars FC on Friday at 6:00 PM.
