Expectant mother, four others perish in Iganga, Bugweri accidents

Police in Busoga East are investigating two separate hit-and-run accidents that killed five people including a pregnant mother in Iganga and Bugweri Districts on Wednesday evening.

The first accident occurred at Iwawu-Namasoga, Bulamagi town council in Iganga district along the Iganga-Jinja highway and four people travelling on a motorcycle registration number UFJ 649G perished on the spot.

The deceased persons who died in a hit-and-run crash were identified as Kiiza Musa, 16 and Nabawanuka Rose, 21, both residents of Bulanga in Luuka district. Others are Banabasi Kiiza, 18, a resident of Mawudo in Bulanga town council Luuka district and Wandera Kenneth, 19, a resident of Nambale-Buwunga in Bugiri District.

The Busoga East police spokesperson SSP Diana Nandawula confirmed the accident on Thursday saying police have since intensified the hunt for the driver and the car that caused the accident.

“The accident occurred at Namasoga along Iganga-Jinja highway and four people were knocked dead by a car which was not identified. The accident involved three males and a female who were travelling on a motorcycle UFJ 649G,” SSP Nandawula said.

In a related development, police said another accident occurred at Idudi along Buyanga-Busembatia road in Bugweri district where a 4-year-old girl child identified as Hawula Mutesi was knocked dead by a car which is yet to be identified.

By press time, the four bodies were still in the mortuary of Iganga General Hospital at Nakavule while that of the child was handed to the parents for burial arrangements, as investigations into the matter continued to apprehend the perpetrated drivers.
