JINJA: Siblings assault in-law to death over domestic violence

Police in Buwenge, Jinja district have arrested and detained two of their own to help in investigating circumstances under which siblings reportedly assaulted their sister’s husband to death in cases related to domestic violence.

Preliminary investigations obtained indicate that the sister identified as Sharifah Katono who has been living with her husband had reportedly filed an assault case against her husband Paul Gusango, 30, at Buwenge Central Police station on June 28, this year. This attracted the brothers of Katono to intervene following persistent extramarital affairs.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi told DailyExpress that Katono’s brothers assaulted their in-law (Paul Gusango) on July 7, 2024, at Kalebera village, Buwenge rural sub-county in Jinja district after following up on their sister’s case of assault and got angered with the conduct of their in-law, which prompted them to beat him to commas.

“On July 7, 2024, Katono’s brothers made a follow-up on the case, where two police officers whose names haven’t been disclosed for purposes of conducting thorough investigations were involved. The officers went to conduct an arrest but the suspect exhibited violent behaviour, took off and the in-laws followed him up,”

“…the in-laws allegedly beat him up seriously to the extent of causing grievous injuries on his head despite tireless efforts from the police officers to restrain the in-laws,” Mubi said.

Police rushed the victim to the nearby health facility for medical attention and was later referred to Buwenge General Hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Tuesday, July 09.

However, contrary reports from police have revealed that Gusango before the fateful day, had been accusing his wife Sharifah of having an extramarital sex affair with a man yet-to-be-identified and It is further reported that Katono had developed deep emotional bonds with the man in question, something which could have been sparkling endless fights in the family.

Mr Mubi added that a hunt for the man in question accused of causing misunderstandings in a family which could have resulted in loss of life is also intensified and updates will be shared as they come in.

Mubi cautioned married people and all those in relationships to have respect for their spouses and avoid being aggressive in action and character towards the people they treasure. He says it is harmful to initiate a condition in the family which causes misunderstandings.
