L to R: The arrested suspects; Waswa Morishid (scrap dealer) and Wilber Mayanja (boda boda rider)

Jinja, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Jinja City have arrested and detained a boda boda rider and a scrap dealer in connection with cases of murder and aggravated robbery where three people were attacked by panga-wielding men in Kyamagwa cell, Mafubira Division in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson SP James Mubi has identified the suspects as Wilber Mayanja, a boda boda rider and Waswa Morishid, a scrap dealer who were arrested upon police introduction of a sniffer dog at the scene of crime, which led police to the rented rooms of the suspects in Mafubira.

According to Mr Mubi, it is alleged that three panga-wielding men who were moving on a numberless motorcycle attacked a trio of Aramanzan Lutalo, 19, Tenywa Muzamiru and Stephen Kalulu, 60, in the wee hours of Friday, July 19, in Kyamagwa cell in Mafubira Jinja City.

According to an eyewitness whose identity has been protected saw the attackers cutting the victims at around 0500/C. The witness was alarmed seriously and the neighbours responded prompting the attackers to jump on their numberless motorcycle and take off.

“Unfortunately, Lutalo sustained severe injuries on the head and later succumbed to his injuries. Tenywa sustained serious injuries on the head and ruptured left eye, and by press time, he was yet to be referred to Jinja Main Hospital for emergency surgery on his ruptured left eye, and Kalulu, according to the in-charge of GlenZ Dignity hospital, was getting out of danger and said will be discharged possibly by Saturday,” said Mubi in a statement confirming the incident.

The suspects reportedly took mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money belonging to the deceased Aramanzan Lutalo and Tenywa Muzamiru, and police have mounted serious tracking to establish the whereabouts of the culprits.

In the aftermath of the attack, Mubi said the Kiira regional police command immediately commenced prosecution-guided investigations and introduced the police dog at the scene of the crime which led to the apprehension of the suspects.

“The dog proceeded to two rented rooms belonging to boda boda rider identified as Wilber Mayanja and scrap dealer Waswa Morishid residents of the same area (Mafubira). The rooms are owned by the landlady called Lukia Namakula, she’s being interrogated at Mafubira police station” he added.

Police conducted a search in the suspects’ rooms and exhibits of evidence value like panga, hammer, marijuana, scissors and jackets were recovered plus a motorcycle registration number UED 157N which was impounded pending Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) verification process to ascertain ownership.

In a Friday statement, Mubi said that a Multi-Sectoral Approach (MSA) to jointly achieve the purpose of preventing and fighting crimes was ongoing, through ensuring intensified joint security patrols and community sensitization programs in Jinja city and Jinja district.
