Kampala, (UG):- President Yoweri Museveni has sternly warned the youth planning to hold protests in Kampala next week to stay from disturbing the capital’s peace or else they will face tough measures from security forces.
The President while addressing the country on Saturday evening Museveni accused “certain elements, including some opposition figures”, of collaborating with foreigners to incite chaos through riots and illegal demonstrations.
“If these actions continue, further measures may be taken,” Mr Museveni warned, adding that “inconsiderate processions and riots” would not be tolerated in the city centre.
“These people are unfair and inconsiderate and should check themselves or we will have no alternative but to check them. When you demonstrate in a place like Kampala, people are selling their products on the roadside. Are you going to step on people’s products? You are playing. Do not have such ideas in your head,” a fierce Museveni cautioned.
The President however advised those wishing to protest against corruption to contact Col. Edith Nakalema, who organized an Anti-Corruption Walk in 2019, to avoid disrupting city life.
Museveni’s warning comes just days ahead of the planned July 23 protests over alleged corruption in Parliament.
Police in response to the request from the organizers of the demo to have the protests in the city declared the demo as illegal and warned participants of serious legal ramifications.
The youths behind the anti-corruption march to parliament say they want to express themselves against the deeply entrenched corruption in government that undermines public service delivery.
Protests in neighbouring Kenya have brought the government of President William Ruto to its knees, compelling him to fire his cabinet and announce austerity measures.
