Kampala, (UG):- Police in Kampala are actively hunting for the prime suspect and gang leader of a group of thugs who last week appeared in a viral CCTV footage attacking an Indian businessman and robbing him in broad daylight.

Joshi Keshav, a 32-year-old Indian national and tour and travel company operator was attacked by a group of people who posed as boda-boda riders near the Victoria University junction.

During the incident, the robbers forcibly took the victim’s black bag, which contained 150,000 shillings, a laptop, and a mobile phone.

Now in an update on the incident currently under investigation, Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma said several suspects linked to the robbery have since been arrested but the prime suspect identified as Ibra Kisenyi remains at large and is actively being hunted.

“In response to the incident, law enforcement promptly initiated an operation to apprehend the suspects. On July 16, 2024, at approximately 19:30 hours, police arrested one Mubaraka Sulaiman, who confessed to his involvement in the robbery. He provided details about the planning of the crime, identifying one Ibra Kisenyi as the ringleader,” ACP Kituuma told journalists during a Monday press briefing at Naguru Police headquarters.

Kisenyi appeared in the video footage wearing a white t-shirt and is seen physically confronting the victim, accompanied by individuals known only by their aliases: Toofa, Ian, and Simple.

According to ACP Kituuma, Sulaiman further disclosed that after the robbery at Esso Corner, the same group proceeded to Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road, where they robbed a mobile money vendor of her bag containing an unspecified amount of cash.

DailyExpress understands that Ibra Kisenyi, Mubaraka, Simple, and Toofa had all been released from prison between March and July 2024 before resorting to criminality yet again terrorising city dwellers.

Kisenyi, for example, has been linked to various criminal activities, including incidents at Acacia Avenue, City Oil, Bugolobi Junction, Mawanda Road, and the recent robbery at Esso Corner.

Despite the arrests of several suspects in these cases, ACP Kituuma says Kisenyi remains at large, adding that; “All groups involved in these crimes utilize motorcycles and are known to operate in the Kitezi-Sayooni area near the garbage dumping site.”

Police urged the public to refrain from carrying large amounts of cash, which saved the victim in this incident as he had a small sum on him which mitigated the loss.

He also condemned the apathy displayed by onlookers during violent attacks, which highlights the need for community vigilance and support in such situations.
