KIGEZI: Prisons Service empowers officers with life-changing skills in special training

Kabale, (UG):- As part of the ongoing training program countrywide, Uganda Prisons over the weekend conducted a training for officers in charge of prisons in the Kigezi Region.

The training, held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Capricorn Hotel in Kabale District, aimed to enhance the officers’ skills in customer care, public relations, mindset change, UPS doctrines, financial literacy, and improving the UPS brand, reputation, image, and positive outlook.

The training emphasized respectful treatment of inmates, effective communication, conflict resolution, and strategies for improving the prison’s public image.

Mr Frank Baine, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and the Spokesperson who led the delegation from Kampala trained participants in personal financial management and urged officers to set a good example and guide junior officers in embracing a saving culture.

He cautioned officers against engaging with print and electronic media without proper authorization from the CGP (Commissioner General of Prisons) and stressed the prohibition of capturing or sharing photos, videos, or social media content without the corresponding authority, urging the potential of serious disciplinary actions for non-compliance.

Mr. Akankunda Apollo, Commissioner of Prisons (National, Regional and International Cooperation), highlighted the importance of understanding legal instruments, networking, and engaging with others.

The training also saw the official opening of a customer care desk in the region.

Similar trainings have been conducted in all prisons over the past years, focusing on middle-line managers, and have greatly improved the image of the service with good management principles, aiming for safe, secure, and humane custody of offenders.
