NRM speak out on accident that killed former MP Simon Aleper

Iganga, (UG):- The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has confirmed the death of Hon Simon Peter Aleper, the party’s Vice Chairperson in charge of Karamoja Sub-region who perished in a fatal accident along the Iganga-Mbale highway on Tuesday morning.

Aleper, 50, was reportedly headed to Kampala for official party (NRM) duties when his personal vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 UAP 787Q collided with a yet-to-be-identified motor vehicle.

In a brief statement released via the party’s socials, The NRM Secretary General, Rt Hon Richard Todwong confirmed the death of Aleper who was also a member of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and said burial arrangements would later be communicated.

“The NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) this morning received with shock the disheartening news of the untimely demise of our Vice Chairman for Karamoja Region, Hon. Simon Peter Aleper, who died in an accident in Iganga District on the Mbale-Jinja Highway in the morning hours of Tuesday, 23rd 2024. We convey our deepest condolences to the family, H.E. the President who is also the NRM National Chairman, the people of Karamoja and the entire NRM fraternity. Burial arrangements will be communicated later,” a brief statement announcing Aleper’s death from the NRM Secretariat read.

Busoga East Region Police said the two vehicles collided head-on at around 1:30 am at Bukoona village, Nakalama Sub County in Iganga District along the Iganga-Tirinyi highway.

According to Ms Diana Nandawula, the regional police spokesperson, Aleper, who was the lone occupant of his Land Cruiser registration number UAP 787Q, is suspected to have collided with an unidentified vehicle that forced him off the road resulting in his death.

“It is suspected that the deceased’s vehicle swerved off the road into a ditch, after which an oncoming car knocked it; but we are yet to establish the truth,” She added.

The deceased’s body was first taken to Nakavule Hospital in Iganga town and later transferred to Mulago Hospital as a hunt intensifies for the runaway driver of the killer car.

The late Aleper popular in his circles as Hon ASPRO recently contested for the Moroto municipality MP seat in the 2021 elections but lost to Hon. Francis Adome Lorika in the race which was one of the tightest in the Karamoja Sub-region.
