Dokolo, (UG):- Leaders of Dokolo Town Council in northern Uganda’s Dokolo district have been inducted on their roles and responsibilities for the first time since 2021 when they were elected.

The two-day induction training started on Tuesday 22nd 2014 and ended on Wednesday 23rd 2024 attracted 20 participants both political and technical staff.

During the opening remarks on Tuesday morning, Martin Ocen Odyek, a senior consultant with Governance Link Uganda which conducted the training, implored councillors to put a budget for study tours in other areas.

“Benchmark helps on the series of programmes or sectors to improve service delivery i.e Education, Finance, Leadership & Governance and Micro-scale irrigation system being supported by Ugift. Always prioritise a budget that can help you go out and learn so that you can come back and implement,” Ocen said.

He also advised the councillors to dress decently to differentiate them from other ordinary people in the community and urged holders of public office to be accountable to the public for their decisions and actions and must submit themselves to the scrutiny necessary to ensure this.

“Parliament passed the Anti Pornography Act recently and the Act among others, touches on appropriate dress code, are councillors aware? better take time to read and correct it,” Ocen urged.

The speaker of Dokolo Town Council, Yubentino Eram applauded the trainer for the knowledge impacted on them. He said they used to carry out council business in an unorganized manner but hope this will change soon with the training received.

Rose Akello Erem, the chairperson LC3 of the Dokolo town council briefed the leaders on the tactics to be used to develop the Town council.

Akello also talked about the sealing relationship between the technical and political wings to ensure effective service delivery to the people of Dokolo Town Council and Uganda as a country.

Meanwhile, Benard Opige the Town Clerk of Dokolo Town Council said inducting the councillors is timely because since then they never received any induction to help them perform well in council.

“Since then we had not had a chance to induct our councillors but this time we thought it wise to carry it so that they do the right thing,” Opige said.
