Kampala, (UG):- President Museveni has sacked embattled Trade Ministry Permanent Secretary, Geraldine Busuulwa Ssali and replaced her with Alex Kakooza on caretaker role effective immediately.

In an internal memo dated July 25, 2024, Alfred Oyo Andima, the Under Secretary overseeing finance and administration at MTIC, announced the appointment of Kakooza and officially introduced him to the Ministry.

A former PS at the Ministry of Education, Kakooza joins the Trade Ministry from the Office of the Vice-President where he has been a principal private secretary to H.E Jessica Alupo.

He now replaces Ssali who was on July 18 charged and remanded to Luzira over criminal charges related to money laundering, causing the government financial loss and abuse of office where she conspired with MPs to steal cooperative funds in excess of billions meant for war loss compensation.

The decision to sack Ssali comes exactly 10 months since she was dramatically reinstated to the same position after she had been sacked by her line minister Francis Mwebesa.

The minister had moved to replace Ms Ssali with Alfred Andima on the recommendation of Treasury Secretary Ramathan Ggoobi, who acted after MPs had fingered the embattled PS for fraud and other irregularities committed on her watch.

Ssali remains on remand in Luzira as she awaits the High Court to set a date for her trial to start.
