Government’s Extravagant Extensions: A Detrimental Path

By George Ofwono

In a bewildering decision, the Ugandan government has extended the validity of 15.8 million National IDs for one year, a move that raises serious concerns about the government’s priorities and its commitment to efficient governance.

This latest extension comes amid a string of similar delays, including the postponement of local council elections. Such prolonged suspensions not only undermine the democratic process but also disrupt essential services and create a culture of complacency.

Minister of State for Internal Affairs David Muhoozi’s claim that the ID extension is necessary to prevent disruption of business is both flimsy and misleading. In fact, the lack of timely renewal creates uncertainty and delays in crucial transactions, such as banking, voting, and travel.

The government’s inability to adequately prepare for these vital activities suggests a fundamental lack of foresight and planning. By constantly pushing deadlines, the government is setting a dangerous precedent and eroding the public’s trust.

Furthermore, the extension of ID validity raises security concerns. Expired IDs provide a loophole for individuals to assume false identities or engage in criminal activities. The government’s lax approach to ID management undermines its efforts to combat fraud and secure the country.

It is alarming that the government is prioritizing short-term expediency over long-term stability and efficiency. The constant extensions create a sense of crisis management, rather than a proactive and responsible approach to governance.

The government must urgently reconsider its strategy and commit to timely elections and essential service provision. By setting realistic deadlines and adhering to them, the government can demonstrate its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the well-being of its citizens.

Failure to address these concerns will only lead to further deterioration of public confidence and undermine the nation’s progress towards a brighter future.
