Man United’s Onana pays tribute to Ugandan fans after AFCON Qualifier at Namboole

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has captured the hearts of Ugandan fans during his recent visit with the Cameroonian national team.

Onana, who has been making headlines for his stellar performances with the English Premier League giants, was met with an outpouring of support as He and his teammates took to the field in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Indomitable Lions, as Cameroon is fondly known, faced Zimbabwe in a crucial qualifying match held at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on September 10, 2024.

Despite the match ending in a goalless draw, Onana’s presence and performance were the highlights of the evening.

Over 15,000 fans, many donning Manchester United jerseys, flocked to the stadium to witness their club’s star goalkeeper in action.

The atmosphere was electric, with a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation among the crowd. Onana, whose reputation as a top-class shot-stopper is well-earned, made several crucial saves that kept Zimbabwe from breaking the deadlock.

However, the excitement of the night was tinged with a hint of disappointment for the fans who were unable to spend more time with their hero. Following the match, Onana had to make a swift departure to catch a flight back to England. His hasty exit was a necessary step to fulfil his commitments with Manchester United.

Onana took to Instagram to express his gratitude and share a heartfelt message with his Ugandan supporters. “Thank you for the warm welcome. I would have liked to spend more time with all of you. See you next month in Uganda,” he posted.

The match itself was hosted at the Mandela National Stadium due to Zimbabwe’s lack of a CAF standard facility for the qualifiers.

Looking ahead, Onana and the Cameroonian national team are expected to return to Uganda in October for a match against Kenya.

However, as reported by renowned Kenyan sports journalist Eric Njiiru, the Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, which are currently undergoing renovations, will not be ready until next year. This may impact the logistics of their visit, but it is clear that Onana’s connection with the Ugandan fans will remain strong.
