Suspected thief lynched by angry mob in Budaka

Budaka, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Budaka District are investigating circumstances under which one Mwanani Geoffrey, a suspected thief was killed by an angry mob in a Saturday tragic incident.

Mwanani, a male adult and resident of Kakule Subcounty lost his life today, September 14, 2024, at Namengo Sapiri village, Budaka Town Council when residents ganged up on him after he was caught with suspected stolen items.

Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos that ensued when the mob confronted him, allegedly over suspicions of theft. Items found at the scene, including hoofer speakers, torches, and bags, are believed to have been stolen by the deceased prior to the incident.

These materials were located near his body, and dumped at the Namengo Sapiri rock, suggesting a violent confrontation took place when no one else was present.

Local authorities were alerted to the scene by Kabanda Geoffrey, a 40-year-old local council committee member who reported the grim discovery to law enforcement.

Upon their arrival, police documented the scene meticulously, recording relevant statements and gathering evidence. They recovered logs believed to have been used in the attack, further corroborating the violent nature of the incident.

The body of Mwanani Geoffrey has been transported to the Mbale City mortuary for a post-mortem examination, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death. Police have indicated that inquiries are ongoing to ascertain the identities of those involved in the mob action.

SP Semewo Samuel, the Ag. Public Relations Officer for Bukedi North region, confirmed the police’s commitment to thoroughly investigating the incident and ensuring that justice is served. “We are working diligently to gather all facts and bring those responsible to account,” he stated.
