The bus, orange in colour, had been parked due to mechanical issues and was en route from Kampala to Mbale when it broke down.

Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene, where they found the deceased, identified as Babirye Adiyah, a passenger in the Toyota Wish.

The driver of the Toyota Wish, Isabirye Sulaiman, along with another passenger, Amina Sulaiman, sustained critical injuries and were swiftly transported to Mbale Referral Hospital for urgent medical care.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the parked bus lacked necessary warning signs and lights, which may have contributed to the driver’s inability to see it in time. Witnesses reported that the dark conditions of the early morning likely compounded the danger.

Authorities from the Bukedi North region, including the police, responded quickly, conducting a thorough examination of the scene. They created a sketch plan of the accident site and transported the deceased to Budaka Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.

Both the Toyota Wish and the parked bus have been towed to the Budaka police parking yard for further inspection.

Initial findings suggest that the accident may have been caused by careless use of the road by the bus driver. Police said they are conducting further inquiries to gather more information and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SP Semewo Samuel, the Acting Public Relations Officer for the Bukedi North region, has urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
