Bonding with refugees for socio-economic development

By Edgar Barigye

On the joyous occasion of President Museveni’s 80th birthday celebrated in Nakaseke District on 15th   September 2024 if there was anything that made me so happy was to see the Congolese and Ethiopian communities gracing the event with their vibrant presence. Their participation serves as a touching reminder of the value of Uganda’s sacrifice in providing a safe haven for these resilient individuals.

For decades, Uganda has opened its doors to refugees and asylum seekers from across the continent, offering a beacon of hope and security. Today, Uganda hosts over 1,394,678 refugees from various countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Burundi, Ethiopia, Somalia and many other countries.

As I reflected on the vibrant participation of refugees at President Museveni’s birthday celebration, my mind wandered back to a touching moment of unity I witnessed at Tawfiq Mosque in Kisenyi, Kampala a few days ago. This Somalis-led mosque came together to support Mr. Isa Sissoko (Ugandan), Chairman of Noor Islamic Unity for Peace and Development, in his time of grief. Mr. Sissoko had lost his beloved daughter at Rubaga Hospital, despite investing heavily in medical care. The mosque’s compassionate response was a testament to the power of community and unity. They organized a heartfelt service and offered much-needed financial and moral support to the bereaved family at that time.

This moving display of solidarity reminded me that, beyond cultural and national differences, humanity can come together in times of need. Tawfiq Mosque’s selfless act embodies the values of compassion, empathy, and unity that define our shared human experience. Moreover, many of these refugees have become esteemed investors, contributing significantly to Uganda’s economic growth. They have established thriving businesses, created employment opportunities, and stimulated innovation. It is only fair that they be granted a special status to participate in choosing the leaders who will ensure the continued peace and prosperity of their adopted homeland.

My idea is that by granting refugees status to participate in choosing the leaders, we will have acknowledged their valuable contributions and empowered them to shape the future of their businesses and communities. This inclusive approach would foster a sense of belonging, encourage further investment, and globally reinforce Uganda’s reputation as a beacon of stability and opportunity.

The people of Tawfiq Mosque have shown us that, even in the face of adversity, we can find solace in each other’s company. May their selfless spirit inspire us all to build bridges of understanding, compassion, and unity, and to recognize the valuable contributions of our refugee communities. I therefore ask my fellow Ugandans to continue working towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and participate in shaping our collective future.

To the Congolese, Ethiopian, South Sudanese, Burundian, Rwandese and other refugee communities, I express my heartfelt appreciation for your resilience, determination, and contributions to Uganda. Your presence has enriched our nation, and it is my utmost prayer that our leaders will keep Uganda walking this journey with you, towards a brighter future for all.

Lastly, Your Excellency President Museveni, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a joyous 80th birthday and express my heartfelt congratulations on this milestone. May this special moment mark the beginning of another year of wisdom, good health, and continued leadership.
