Pallisa, (UG):- A devastating accident at the Akisim Trading Centre along the Kibale-Agule road has left the community in mourning after a Mitsubishi Canter truck lost control and struck several individuals, resulting in the deaths of two juveniles and one adult.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 16, 2024, when the vehicle, registered as UAV 891M, veered off course and collided with four people.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was driven by Ayub, a resident of Kalalaka in Pallisa Town Council, who fled the scene shortly after the accident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle experienced brake failure while descending from Ometai Road to join the Kibale-Agule road.
The truck first hit a motorcycle, registration number UEG 408F, which was carrying a rider and a passenger on their way from Agule to Kibale. The collision was catastrophic, as the truck then veered off, crossing a trench and striking two children who were seated off-road.
Police identified the deceased individuals as Opolot John a 10-year-old resident of Akisim Central, Aoloi Daniel a 9-year-old from the same area and Okiria James a 24-year-old motorcycle rider who succumbed to his injuries later at Pallisa General Hospital
In addition to the fatalities, Isanin Christiane, an adult female passenger on the motorcycle, is currently in critical condition at Pallisa General Hospital.
Authorities have indicated that careless driving is the preliminary cause of the accident.
Bukedi North Police Spokesperson, SP Samuel Semewo told DailYExpress that officers responded to the scene of accident and recorded statements from eyewitnesses, cleared the area, and ferried the bodies to Pallisa General Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
“The involved vehicles have been towed to the Pallisa police parking yard, pending inspection,” Semewo said. “Inquiries are ongoing as authorities continue to gather more information about the incident.”
Semewo emphasized that police are committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The families of the victims have called for accountability and justice, urging the authorities to take necessary actions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
