New York, (US):-Uganda’s Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi Ongom has called on world leaders to empower youth, women, and vulnerable groups if the proposed “Pact for the Future” is to achieve the shared goals.

The proposed “Pact for the Future,” currently a matter of debate at the United Nations General Assembly, is a framework aimed at addressing key global issues through collective action. The Pact includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

While addressing the assembly in New York on Monday, September 23, Minster Amongi, urged world leaders to empower future generations, particularly youth, women, and vulnerable populations if the goals of the pact are to be fully realized.

Hon. Amongi highlighted the importance of translating commitments into concrete actions, emphasizing that reforming the UN’s governance and rethinking multilateralism is essential to tackling challenges that transcend national borders.

“The challenges outlined in this pact target the well-being of all humanity. We must engage with the youth, women, and vulnerable communities if we are to build a sustainable future. These groups will bear the brunt of the world we shape today,” said Hon. Amongi during her address at the Women’s Forum, a side event hosted by the President of the General Assembly.

She emphasized that “the children, youth and vulnerable communities will be the ones to shoulder the consequences of our actions of today, with the burden of restoring what we have destroyed, hence the need to truly boost the participation of youth and women, and other vulnerable groups.”

The minister therefore called for building a better future, with the involvement of everyone, where no one is left behind.

Leaders from all over the world are gathering in New York to discuss the negotiated pact, which is designed to ensure the UN remains aligned with its original mission of maintaining peace, and security and fostering sustainable development for future generations.

The “Summit of the Future,” the focus of the ongoing debate, seeks to provide solutions to pressing global challenges such as climate change, rising sea levels, gender inequality, technological advancements, and the empowerment of youth and vulnerable communities. It also prioritizes reforms within the UN’s governance structures, including a proposed expansion of the Security Council to make it more inclusive of member states from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
