Lira, (UG):- The Secretary-General of the ruling National Resistance Movement Party, Hon Rt Richard Todwong, has challenged the party supporters in Lango sub-region to stop blaming and lamenting only but instead dedicate their time to fighting poverty and empowering households towards sustainable wealth creation.
Todwong made the call on Wednesday, September 25, at Lira Hotel in Lira City, as he met NRM party leaders from Lango sub-region to assess the progress of NRM manifesto implementation.
“Don’t waste a lot of energy discussing UPC. Oh, UPC is very strong, they are singing this. Concentrate on things that affect the ordinary person. They are all fighting for that attention. But because we are not doing our work, they are now using our weaknesses to move closer to the people and turn the people against us, which should be something we should avoid,’’ Todwong said.
“Speak to the people of development opportunities, because UPC will not give it to them. Let your tenure in office be that which can change the lives of the people that you lead. Our work is to go and mobilize the community to produce the raw materials that the industrial sector needs. That is the linkage we should be fighting for,” he explained further.
However, some NRM party members in the meeting decried challenges instigated by UPC collaboration. Betty Awor Engola, the Apac district woman Member of Parliament, accused the NRM-UPC alliance as one problem causing the NRM Party in the Lango subregion.
“I want to be honest. This marriage of UPC and NRM, Secretary General, that marriage must be divorced. Because it’s causing huge problems to us,” Awor said.
The Oyam former woman MP, Beatrice Lagada said UPC is famous for something she called gang-pressing that NRM party leaders should be steadfast to overcome.
“When you, one person, comes out like Tanga has come out and said what he has said, then many people gang around you and they squeeze you and intimidate you so that you can no longer stand for your views,” Lagada said.
However, Tanga Odoi, the NRM electoral commission chairman, blamed some of the NRM party members in Lango sub-region for double standards.
“And you leaders are now divided because of bread and butter. Have the backbone that you are NRM in the day and in the night. Not to steal yourself into UPC at night, in the morning you are in NRM. You are the ones who are disturbing us,” Tanga narrated.
Meanwhile, the bishop of Lango Diocese Rt Rev Bishop Professor Alfred Olwaa said political parties need to inspect their party members well. “Whether for the church or for the party, for any community, if as a leader you don’t inspect, don’t expect,” Bishop Olwaa said.
