By Mukonyezi Steven Akiiki

Among the things all parents should prioritise when helping children to choose careers, hands-on skills should be thoroughly looked into. Parents should prepare their children for life after them because if office work cannot satisfy all the needs that are there to be taken care of, skills can help them move on. They are therefore worth investing in at an early stage in life.

Musinguzi Gideon, being humbled by life, was perplexed on the next move in his life. Little did he know that life would be better than it was then. He had just lost his father, and he only had his mother, a housewife to look up to for everything.

What is so inspiring about Gideon is the fact that he chose not to go so far in school. After senior four, he realized the importance of hands-on skills in the next chapter of life after his father’s demise. Actually, some young people who do not perform well in class can do better in hands-on skills.

This young man’s story after two years in a technical school should be an inspiration to many young people out there who think that they have failed to make it in life. Getting involved in political demonstrations may not help or even may take long to positively impact on your life. His impact should help you change your life.

Gideon now owns a metal fabrication/ welding workshop (Mukodomix Metal Workshop) in Kyenjojo town council. He employs a good number of young people who have also been victims of certain circumstances. He is also a trainer, currently working with MasterCard and Uganda Rural Development and Training Institute. He is a married man with children and a home.

To the young people who want office jobs, the steady and long-lasting progress in your development is in you having some skills which can help you do something physically. Even if you have an office job, at a certain point you will retire and go back to the village. How will you cope with the new situation and environment around you?

You need to prepare yourself for that new life by getting equipped with hands-on skills.
