Gulu University crowned 2024 Inter-University debate winners

Gulu University Students, Kakanyero Elisha and Omara Brian being crowned as the best debaters of the competition

Gulu University students Omara David and Kakanyero Elisha were crowned the best debaters as the Northern Uganda varsity emerged overall winner of the 2024 inter-university debating championship.

The competitions that took place at Kyambogo University from 2nd-4th, October 2024 saw Gulu University followed by Kyambogo University whose representatives Kahinju Deborah and Mary Sharon Karungi were among the top performers.

Other Universities that participated in the competitions included the Islamic University of Uganda, Makerere University, and Sumaiya Girls School among others

The best performers were given a trophy, certificates and medals for participating in the competition which was started by the Uganda Dialogue Arena (UDA) to create a platform for students to debate about social issues affecting their country.

The executive director of Uganda Dialogue Arena (UDA) Mr Fredrick T Musimenta said this was the 8th edition of the competition and said this was a hybrid event that was attended both online and physically by the students from the above-mentioned Universities

“This was a hybrid event and we are grateful that it was a success. I thank all the participating schools and Universities for allowing their students to take part in this competition,” he said

Dr. Geoffrey Arinaitwe, an Agricultural Scientist at the National Agriculture Research Laboratories (NARL) said that they partnered with the Uganda Dialogue Arena because because they would like young people to get knowledge about environmental conservation and protection

“Young people are the majority as we saw in the recent statistics from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Their statistics being 23.5% means that they should take the central role of learning more about climate change,” he said

The event was organized under the theme “Climate Change-The Environment and Youth-Led Innovations We Need.”
