Alebtong, (UG): The Local Council One Chairperson [LC1] of Abiloyenyo village in Adwiri Parish, Adwiri sub-county in Alebtong District is one leader who is likely to celebrate Independence Day in police cell over the alleged murder of his wife.

Jimmy Ogwal, 41, was arrested and is currently held at Alebtong CPS on accusations of killing his wife Immaculate Apio, 36, of the same village on Sunday, October 6th, 2024 amid claims of the latter’s infidelity.

Preliminary reports given to police indicate that on the fateful day at around 12:30 PM, Ogwal assaulted his wife Apio using a turbine belt from a grinding machine and some wood, rendering her unconscious following a prolonged domestic dispute.

Richard Emuna, Chairperson LC3 of Adwiri sub-county, said Ogwal reportedly heard rumours that his wife was in a relationship with one Okello Bonny from a bar where they were drinking. “We suspect that Ogwal must have acted in annoyance, which was uncalled for.”

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, said a case of murder by assault has been registered at Alebtong Central Police Station.

“Police visited the scene of the crime, examined and documented it. Exhibits, including a broken table and a rubber turbine belt, were recovered. The body was taken to Alebtong Health Centre IV pending a post-mortem. Jimmy Ogwal was traced, arrested, and is now detained at CPS where investigations are ongoing,” Okema said.

Okema also appealed to couples to part ways peacefully in case of misunderstanding without resorting to violence. “This is a very strong message to our people because most times we have seen this happen. Instead of killing your spouse, allow them to move peacefully and start a new life. In this way, it may help because most of these cases happen when a lot of intervention has been made without yielding fruits,” Okema added.

In Uganda, the legal implications for a case involving the alleged murder of a spouse are quite serious. The accused would likely face charges of murder under the Penal Code Act, with severe punishments including the death penalty or life imprisonment.
