Soroti, (UG):- Soroti-based Ugandan lawyer, Joshua Okello has asked the United Kingdom to apologize to Ugandans over the ‘unjust sanctions’ imposed on Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anita Annet Among.
Okello, a staunch supporter of Among, recently took the UK government to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), challenging the legitimacy of the sanctions imposed following Uganda’s adoption of the controversial Anti-LGBTQ Act.
But, according to the maverick lawyer, the court has been slow to schedule a hearing of his case, prompting him to accuse the judicial system of dragging its feet due to his “strong evidence.”
In a press statement released to the media on Monday, October 07, 2024, Okello, the founder of the Global Litigation Initiative argues that the delay in the hearing is intentional and that despite completing all required formalities, including downloading and submitting the official ECHR application, the court has failed to communicate any updates or schedule a hearing.
“The European Court of Human Rights is delaying to fix the hearing date because I have strong evidence against their fellow whites,” he said. “I regard this delay as fear of shame on the part of the European Court.”
“They know they have no substantial evidence against the Speaker, and this delay is only making the world see the truth. It is a reflection that Hon. Anita Among was innocent all along.”
Lawyer Okello also highlighted the role of modern technology in uncovering truth and exposing injustice. He likened the proliferation of surveillance systems, including space-based satellites and other technological advancements, to divine tools used by God to reveal hidden secrets and uphold truth.
Quoting from the Bible, he said, “God has determined, as He said in Luke 12:2-3, that secrets will be uncovered, the truth will come forth, and God’s thoughts about every behaviour and action will be vindicated.”
Okello, who has positioned himself as a defender of Ugandan sovereignty, emphasized that the sanctions imposed by the UK were not only an affront to Speaker Among but to the dignity of the entire Ugandan Parliament and the nation itself.
The European Court of Human Rights was yet to respond to the petition or address the allegations raised by the Ugandan lawyer at the time this story was filed.
