One such individual is Professor Tarsis Kabwegyere, a renowned sociologist, academic, and politician who has played a significant role in Uganda’s development. His dedication, expertise, and commitment to public service make him an exemplary figure worthy of recognition.
Professor Kabwegyere’s contributions to Uganda’s history are vast and notable. He chaired the Moshi Conference in Tanzania, a summit that organized the removal of Idi Amin’s regime, a pivotal moment in Uganda’s history. This heroic act alone deserves recognition and honor. Moreover, his extensive service in various cabinet positions demonstrates his versatility and dedication to Uganda’s development.
As Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1981, Professor Kabwegyere played a crucial role in shaping Uganda’s international relations and diplomatic efforts. He also served as State Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1987 to 1991, showcasing his expertise in foreign policy and international cooperation. His tenure as Special Envoy in the Great Lakes Region from 1996 to 2002 showcases his commitment to regional stability and conflict resolution. As Minister for Local Government from 2003 to 2005, he worked tirelessly to promote decentralization and community development.
Professor Kabwegyere’s dedication to disaster management is evident in his tenure as Minister for Disaster Preparedness from 1996 to 2011. His leadership and expertise helped Uganda navigate numerous natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Additionally, his role as Minister for General Duties in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2012 to 2016 demonstrates his ability to provide strategic guidance and support to the government.
Beyond his cabinet positions, Professor Kabwegyere’s contributions extend to his membership in the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, where he continues to promote social justice and development. His chairmanship of the Rwenzori Conflict Committee showcases his commitment to peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
Notably, Professor Kabwegyere also chaired the Muslim Community, a position that enabled him to promote peace and understanding among Muslims in Uganda. His leadership helped to resolve conflicts and promote interfaith dialogue, contributing significantly to the country’s religious harmony.
