Kibuku, (UG):- Authorities in eastern Uganda’s Kibuku District are conducting an investigation following the alarming discovery of an abandoned plastic magazine containing 30 live rounds of ammunition.

The incident occurred on Independence Day, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in the Buyerya zone of Kalempete Parish, Tirinyi Subcounty in Kibuku District.

The discovery was made by Muluga Abdul Kalim, a 52-year-old local leader and chairman of the LC1 Kitolo 1 zone, who reported the find to the police at approximately 10:00 AM. Upon receiving the report, police swiftly arrived at the scene to investigate.

According to preliminary reports from the Bukedi North police, the recovered magazine is black and bears the markings “7.62*39CZMAG.” At the scene, investigators noted that two rounds of ammunition were found outside the magazine, one lying approximately two centimetres away and the other about one meter away.

A team comprising police Scene of Crime Officers (Socos), detectives, and members of the technical department arrived to document the scene. They took photographs, recorded statements from witnesses, and filed the incident under CRB 107/2024 Tirinyi police.

Police officials confirmed that the magazine does not correspond to an AK-47 firearm, raising concerns about its origin and purpose.

“We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of this magazine,” said SP Semewo Samuel, the Acting Public Relations Officer for Bukedi North. “Our teams are conducting thorough searches in the area to ensure public safety and to gather more information.”

The police have urged residents to report any suspicious activities or information that may assist in the ongoing investigation. The discovery of live ammunition in a residential area raises significant safety concerns, prompting calls for heightened vigilance among community members.

As investigations continue, police will keep the public informed about any developments related to this case. Authorities are committed to ensuring that such incidents do not pose a risk to the community.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert and to cooperate with law enforcement as they work to resolve this matter.
