KASESE: Senior four candidate commits suicide a week to UCE exams after impregnating S1 student

Kasese, (UG):- Authorities in southwestern Uganda’s Kasese District are investigating how a Senior Four candidate committed suicide just a week to the start of 2024 UCE exams after he was suspended for impregnating a senior one female student in the same school.

Maate Emmanuel, a student at Karambi Secondary School was among the hundreds at the Kasese school who were preparing to sit for his final exams next week.

According to the deputy headteacher, Mr Samson Kule, the deceased was suspended from school at the beginning of this term after it was found that he had impregnated a senior one student at the same school.

‘’We suspended him at the beginning of this term for impregnating a form one student, and he was waiting to sit for his final exams next week,” explained Mr Kule, adding that by the time the incident happened, the deceased was still at home, where police and parents were handling the matter of pregnancy.

Mr Paddy Muhindo, the LC3 Chairperson for Karambi Sub County, regretted the tragic incident and stressed that it’s unfortunate to lose such a young life. “We must come together as a community to support the family and ensure that our children receive the guidance they need,” he said.

The Lc3 boss revealed that at the time of the incident, Maate’s grandfather had sold his land worth two million shillings to pay a fine to the girl’s family.

“This is a stark reminder of the challenges our children face, and we must ensure that we provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive.”

The deceased’s body was, by press time, still at Bwera Hospital for a postmortem waiting for burial in Mirami Village, Karambi Sub County.
